mr. omar almanzar

 Mr. Almanzar joined the 82nd Street Academics Board of Directors in January of 2008. He was previously employed by Community Church as a receptionist as a summer internship while studying towards his B.S. from Cornell University. Mr. Almanzar is currently employed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. He is interested in educational reform, and through his work with 82nd Street Academics, hopes to help close the educational gap that exists for students with lesser opportunities. He holds the J.D. from the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in New York City. Mr. Almanzar resides in Suffolk County.

mr. patrick donohue

 Patrick T. Donohue is First Vice President and Senior Financial Advisor of Merrill Lynch (Bank of America). He is member of the New York Athletic Club, American Legion, and New Stock Exchange Hearing Board. He holds the Bachelor’s Degree from Alfred University. He has mentored many MBA students through his work and has a particular interest in China.

ms. susan latham

Susan Latham is the Director of Development and Communication at the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA), a membership organization for Protestant and non-sectarian health and human service agencies in New York City which has been helping New Yorkers in need since 1922. Prior to joining FPWA, Ms. Latham was the Associate Vice President for Human Resources and Strategic Planning at Metropolitan College of New York. For many years she worked in New York City’s performing arts world, raising funds and conducting publicity and marketing campaigns. She was the Executive Producer for three shows which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival and toured throughout the United States and Europe. As Company Manager for Meredith Monk/The House, she toured extensively on several continents. In addition to serving on the Board of 82nd Street Academics, Ms. Latham also serves on the boards of Richard Foreman’s Ontological-Hysteric Theater, Performing Artservices, and Ping Chong & Company. She holds a B.A. in Communication from Hope College, and an MSW from the Columbia University School of Social Work.

mr. kenji niwa

 Mr. Niwa joined the 82nd Street Academics Board in October, 2007. As the owner of M & V Café on 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights, he comes to the Board offering experience in business management. Mr. Niwa holds a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from the esteemed New York Restaurant School (part of the Art Institutes of New York City). Mr. Niwa’s past experience includes employment at the Zagat-rated Union Square Café. As a Board Member of 82nd Street Academics, Mr. Niwa hopes to improve the quality of services available to the community, develop new youth programs in Jackson Heights, and assist with fundraising efforts. Mr. Niwa resides in New York City.

 Nicole Tang is Finance & Accounting Manager with China Merchants Bank. She is a Certified Public Accountant of America and China. She holds the Bachelor’s Degree from Fudan University in China. Before joining China Merchants Bank, Nicole worked for eight years for PricewaterhouseCoopers as Audit Manager.

dr. ronald tompkins

Dr. Ronald Tompkins, Executive Director, started 82nd Street Academics in 2003. The new agency brought together the Pre-School, Universal Pre-K, After School and Summer School programs operated by Community Church with a unified mission. Dr. Ron has the Ph.D. in Higher Education Policy from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the Master's in Business Administration from the State University of New York, Institute of Technology. His area of interest in the college freshman year experience heavily influenced the 82nd Street Academics mission statement.

Dr. Tompkins has extensive experience in recruiting and coordinating an effective team of professionals. He was the Regional Director for Inter-Varsity in Upstate New York and directed a team of 15 people. He was Senior Pastor at Community Church for 14 years and has been with 82nd Street Academics since its inception. Dr. Tompkins lives in Jackson Heights.
